Cool Queers: LA Artist 'Comet' Creates Vampy Elf Drag

LA-based Comet fell in love with the art of gender illusion at the age of 14, not surprisingly part due to RuPaul’s Drag Race, a discovery that only added fuel to an already-stoked fire of loving makeup and androgyny in general, always fascinated by women, drawn to their strength and beauty. One year later in 2015, Comet was officially born, inspired by strong influential figures like Gwen Stefani, Siouxsie Sioux, Pearl, and Karen O.

Since then, she maintains that drag’s greatest gifts has been its capability to get her through dark times, acting as a beacon when the way ahead was unclear. Though not knowing what the overarching theme of what Comet’s career will be, she hopes her fans will at least enjoy the ride, unpredictable and strange as it’s sure to be.

One of the things she’s most excited about is the debut of her band, Girlfiend. It’s both homage and something wholly original:  a post-punk band in the vein of the Riot Grrrl movement, but fronted by a drag artist whose look could at times be described as a vampish elf.

“The purpose of my drag is self-actualization,” Comet says. “What I want more than anything is to leave a mark, to have an impact, to be remembered long after I am gone.”

Comet’s a star and she’ll set you on fire!
