Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland in the new biopic trailer is Gay Rights

Oscar bait? Maybe, but who cares!

Renée Zellweger is back in rare form as the gay icon Judy Garland in the brand new trailer for the biopic Judy, directed by Rupert Goold. The film is based on the play End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter and appears to be a feast for fans of golden age melodrama.

In the trailer, Zellweger croons a shaky, late-Judy version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow as we see glimpses at pivotal moments of Garland’s life and career. We have a feeling this will be somewhat of a comeback for Zellweger, who has made mostly duds since the early 2000’s Chicago and Cold Mountain.

Judy will debut this Fall, just in time for Oscar season.
